I'm Still on the Mountain

What is this? And why?

The title of this post, and the blog as a whole, comes from a line in a Philip Whalen poem. Now, I’m usually not a huge poetry person! Someone sends along, or I stumble onto something that resonates once every few months, but as a whole I feel fairly ignorant.

This one actually came to me by way of a Gary Snyder anthology, The Gary Snyder Reader. The two writers were friends, and Snyder makes mention of this poem. Here’s the line that ends the poem, and the one that really stuck with me:

Like they say, "Four times up,

Three times down." I'm still on the mountain.

So, what is this space for? Well, for many reasons too boring and obvious to get into here I’ve decided to step away from Instagram, my primary source of promotion for my old radio show and Mothership releases. I’d planned to wrangle something up here, but this was the push that finally made me do it. Shoutout to folks like Violet Ballard, Marco Serrano, claire rousay, Christian Sorrell, Ben King and many others for showing me ways this space could be used, and paving the way for me.

Will folks actually follow? Will those into my radio stuff be annoyed about the TTRPG updates or vice versa? Time will tell!

The plan for now is monthly updates, each with a mix and something TTRPG related. Ambitious? Maybe! I sure am asking a lot of questions for a blog post.

Anyhow, here’s January’s playlist, a mostly mellow affair that opens with a lovely video of Pharoah Sanders performing in an abandoned tunnel:

And a set of “back-up crew” for your Mothership games using a mix of my alternate classes and the stock 1e classes. This grouping includes a Rim Farmer, a Void Musician, and a Death Doula. Three more coming next month! Note: you do not need to own my alternate classes — everything you need to run the character is on the character sheet.

The artwork for these classes comes from Amanda Lee Franck’s Comradery page and the fonts are Terminal Grotesque by Raphaël Bastide, with the contribution of Jérémy Landes [Distributed by velvetyne.fr.] and Pelletier Typed by Luke Pelletier.

Hope to see you back here next month.Sincerely,Joshua
